See what is actually hurting.

Most people leave an appointment with a word they cannot picture. Rotate the body, isolate the structure, and the word becomes a thing you can see.

2,234 structures · 15 systems

Open the atlas and take the body apart.

The model is a large download. It is best on a laptop or a phone on wifi.

What this is

An interactive 3D atlas of human anatomy with 2,234 individually selectable structures across 15 systems, running in your browser. Use it to find the vertebra, disc, joint or nerve behind your diagnosis.

How to use it

  • Drag to orbit the body, scroll or pinch to zoom.
  • Tap any structure to select it and read what it is.
  • Toggle systems on and off, or jump straight to the skeleton.
  • Search by name if you already know what you are looking for.
  • Isolate a single structure to see it on its own.

What to look for

If you have been told you have a herniated disc at L4 to L5, find the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae and the disc between them. If you have sciatica, follow the sciatic nerve from the lower spine down the back of the leg. The structure you are looking at is the structure a targeted injection is aimed at.

Questions

About the atlas.

What is the 3D anatomy atlas?

It is an interactive model of the human body you can rotate, zoom and take apart. You can isolate the spine, follow a nerve, and see the structure a treatment is aimed at. It runs in your browser with nothing to install.

Is this my own anatomy?

No. It is a reference model of an adult male, not a scan of you. It shows where structures sit in a typical body, which is useful for understanding a diagnosis. Your own imaging is reviewed with you in the office.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, with compact controls. The model is a large download, so use wifi if you can. A laptop gives you more room to work with.

Where does the data come from?

The anatomy is BodyParts3D version 4.0, an adult male reference model published under a Creative Commons Attribution licence. It covers 2,234 individually selectable structures across 15 systems.

Anatomy data: BodyParts3D 4.0, CC BY 4.0. The model is a reference anatomy and does not represent every human structure or variation.
